From Kashmir to Punjab: A Family Legacy

My great grand father and his family migrated to the planes of Punjab in mid-1800 century from the lush mountains of Kashmir that is now part of India. My family were orchard farmers in Kashmir and kept herds of goat and sheep. Life was hard in Kashmir Valley and a decision was made to migrate to a warmer climate in the planes of Punjab. Kashmir region is well known for goats that produce the finest wool for making pashmina cloth. Weaving pashmina wool to make shawls was a family profession. Highly embroidered pashmina shawls to this date are considered the best shawls. Family members spent time to learn coloring the wool used for fine carpet weaving.

The business grew and my grandfather traveled all over the sub-continent selling his bright colored wool. Mid nineteenth century, family joined the carpet weaving business. Since that time, several members of the family played a key role in establishing several looms in parts of Pakistan. Member of my family have been the biggest exporter of fine Persian handmade carpets to Europe and now parts of USA.

the Magic of persian rugs

We all know the tale of the magic flying carpet as a symbol of power and imagination. Despite being the perfect way to charm a princess, a Persian rug involves a unique combination of skill and craft to become a work of art that is passed down from generation to generation through periods of peace, invasion, and war. Originating more than 2,500 years ago, the art of carpet weaving began in nomadic tribes as protection from the cold and wet environment. They soon began to develop into traditional patterns to become the work of art that it is today during the rule of several great leaders.

Cyrus the Great was struck by the beauty of these Persian rugs when he conquered Babylon in 539 BC. Persian carpet weaving developed as an industry when Seljuk Turks conquered and ruled Persia during the 11th and 12th centuries, bringing with them rug weavers who were highly skilled in the Turkish rug knot. These traditions were passed down from one generation to another, developing weavers into artists and designers.

Today carpet weaving is by far the most widespread handicraft in Iran. Persian carpets are known for their unique colors, variety of spectacular patterns, and quality of designs. Seen in castles, famous buildings, mansions, and museums all over the world, a Persian rug is among the most treasured of possessions. At RBG, we acquire some of the most admired pieces to make your living space truly magical.
