My great grand father and his family migrated to the planes of Punjab in mid-1800 century from the lush mountains of Kashmir that is now part of India. My family were orchard farmers in Kashmir and kept herds of goat and sheep. Life was hard in Kashmir Valley and a decision was made to migrate to a warmer climate in the planes of Punjab. Kashmir region is well known for goats that produce the finest wool for making pashmina cloth. Weaving pashmina wool to make shawls was a family profession. Highly embroidered pashmina shawls to this date are considered the best shawls. Family members spent time to learn coloring the wool used for fine carpet weaving. The business grew and my grandfather traveled all over the sub-continent selling his bright colored wool. Mid nineteenth century, family joined the carpet weaving business. Since that time, several members of the family played a key role in establishing several looms in parts of Pakistan. Member of my family have been the biggest exporter of fine Persian handmade carpets to Europe and now parts of USA.
